Gary Tann was born in Portsmouth, Virginia on July 14, 1958.

Gary developed a smooth verbal sound at a very young age, which led him to become valedictorian at graduation in 1974. His speech was very inspirational and left a powerful impact on his peers. Years later he was asked to return to give another speech to inspire the upcoming younger generation. To let them know that they can accomplish anything, if they develop firm objectives and goals for themselves…plan today and be aware of where you are going tomorrow. So as a talented and educated adolescent he began to pursue his dream. He always knew that he wanted to be in the radio industry.

In 1977, he started his own production company right out of high school, calling it New York Gentlemen Quality Entertainment. This production included fashion models and disc jockeys in collaboration to promote various talented acts in the NY and Connecticut regions.

Family entertainers have surrounded Gary for most of his life, such as Luther Vandross, Black Ivory, Paramour, and Stone Luv. This has afforded him the insight into the entertainment world. And he feels very blessed to have these strong ties.

While hosting one of his many variety shows, Gary’s talent was recognized by radio veteran, Noel Thomas. This introduction led him to A Broadcast Training Center, which produced renowned personalities like Sue Simmons and Al Banderio. Gary went on to Announcing Training Center in New York and completed courses in training as a disc jockey and in studio operations, under the tutelage of professions in the broadcasting field. After completion in 1982, he was given his first voice over and commercial opportunity, which aired at WRKS KISS-FM for several months.

Since then Gary’s been in and out of the broadcasting entertainment business and venturing out with his own production NYGQE.

In 1989 Gary joined WVIP-106.3FM, where he hosted “Westchester After Dark.” The five–hour broadcast featured a combination of adult contemporary music and classics, which aired on Sundays at midnight. His show took listeners into early Sunday morning with laid-back programming, which included extended music blocks plus listener requests and dedications.

In 1994, Gary joined WHCR/90.3 FM the voice of Harlem, where he currently hosts his show “Harlem After Midnite.” He programs his own format, which consists of R&B and smooth jazz, which is collaborated with gospel and rare R&B classics. This presents a smooth mixture to recuperate from a stressful environment – listening to the tranquil sounds of ocean surf filled with smooth sounds. “Harlem After Midnite,” is a monthly weekend edition, which airs on the 4th Friday of each month at midnight and ends at 6:00am. His listening audience (range from 25 and up), can relax and enjoy 55-minutes of an encore performance by a selected artist at the top of the hour. Also, from 3:00am-4:00am our showcase highlights “Blues Around the Corner.” This segment is dedicated to the late program director, Joe Brown. WHCR’s frequency expands through Central Harlem, areas of the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and a pinch of New Jersey. WHCR can also be heard on the worldwide web at www.whcr.org

Gary enjoys spending time with his wife and two children. He is also very involved in his children’s education and their extra-curricular activities. Gary enjoys music, traveling, movies, theater, swimming, and spending time with his family. He acknowledges a higher power that has bestowed all these blessings onto him.
